Lovers is celebrating 40 years!  

2021 marks the 40th anniversary of Lovers. Founded in 1981 by Phyllis Heppenstall, Lovers has been a fearless leader of the sex positive and sexual wellness movement. Defying all odds, Lovers was founded in a time where women weren’t encouraged to be entrepreneurs, prioritize their pleasure, or even have a presence in a largely male dominated sex toy industry. Nevertheless, Phyllis forged her own path and started something incredibly special.

We are thrilled to follow in Phyllis’s footsteps. In keeping with her mission, Lovers is committed to carving out spaces, both in our stores and digitally, that empower, educate, and inspire people of all backgrounds to reach their greatest pleasure potential. Our History

Lovers was founded in 1981 by a mother and daughter, Phyllis Heppenstall and Kris Butt.

The first three Lovers stores opened just outside Seattle within 14 months of each other. The company grew steadily over the next two decades, establishing itself as the leading lingerie and sexual wellness retail chain. At that time, Lovers stores attracted primarily women and heterosexual couples.

Between 2000 and 2004 Lovers acquired two successful chains in the LA Area - Con Rev and A Touch of Romance. In 2012, Lovers added Christal’s stores in Texas and Tennessee to the roster.

Today we are all proudly Lovers, an omni channel business that operates 42 stores in five states, that provides a robust digital brand and shopping experience at loversstores.com
