Cock rings are the best-selling sex toy for people with penises and it’s easy to understand why. Not only do they boast a bevvy of physical benefits, but they’re also affordable, versatile and the options are endless.

However, like Cinderella’s glass slipper, it’s important you find the perfect fit when purchasing a cock ring, since an ill-fitting ring can be uncomfortable, painful and even damage the penis. Don’t fret too much about that though, your body (and this post) will let you know when something’s not right.

If you’re in the market for a cock ring, here’s what you should know before finding one that suits you best.

What is a Cock Ring?

Cock rings are––get this––ring-shaped devices worn around the penis, or the penis and testicles, to support erections and/or stimulate a sexual partner.

What Do Cock Rings Do?

A cock ring’s primary function is to maintain longer, stiffer, fuller erections. They act similarly to a tourniquet, trapping blood in the shaft and limiting it from escaping. Some cock rings have vibration capabilities and/or anal add-ons (like butt plugs or anal beads) for next-level pleasure. Most are made of silicone, rubber, leather, or metal.

How To Use a Cock Ring

Some cock rings are designed to be worn around the shaft and others are to be worn around the shaft and the testicles. Generally speaking, you can choose from two types of cock rings.

The first is a snap-on ring. To wear one, begin behind the scrotum, pulling the ends of the ring around and snapping them together. These kinds of rings are often made of leather, neoprene, or a similar material. These rings are best adorned when erect.

The second type is a closed ring, which is often made of metal, rubber, or silicone. If the ring is flexible (i.e. rubber, silicone), gently stretch the ring around the shaft and testicles. It’s usually a good idea to trim your pubic hair and lube the ring liberally when putting one on and taking one off to prevent snagging.

If the ring is made of a solid material (i.e. metal), insert one testicle at a time and then tuck your penis in. Since an erect penis won’t tuck as easily, the rings should be put on when flaccid.

How Should a Cock Ring Feel?

When wearing a cock ring, you’re looking for a snug fit, but not so snug that it’s uncomfortable. A slight, blush-color around the base of the penis can be expected. But should you experience pain, severe discomfort, numbness, or your penis begins to darken in color, remove the ring immediately.

As a general rule, cock rings should be worn no longer than 20 to 30 minutes to prevent tissue damage. This is very important, so set a timer if you need to.

What Does a Cock Ring Do?

The main function of a cock ring is to support an erection by restricting blood flow to the penis. This makes the penis firmer, slightly larger, and more sensitive, which can prolong sensation and produce more powerful orgasms.

Cock rings can also provide added stimulation during partnered sex, with additional structures that turn a penis into a vibrator, which feels good for both the wearer and receptive partner. Some cock rings also come with butt plugs or anal beads attached for anal stimulation.

It’s important to note that cock rings are not limited to penises. They can be used on fingers, dildos, strap-ons, etc. to stimulate the clitoris, scrotum, perineum and other erogenous zones.

How Should My Cock Ring Fit?

To prevent injury and maximize pleasure, you need to find a cock ring that fits. While some cock rings come in sets of various sizes and others can be adjusted with clasps, most don’t, so you’d be wise to do some measuring beforehand.

To measure, wrap a strip of paper, string, or ribbon around the base of your penis (or, if you plan to buy a cock ring that fits the penis and testicles, be sure to measure from under your testicles). To get the circumference, measure where the paper, string or ribbon meets. Then, divide this number by pi (3.14) to get the diameter, which is the measurement used when purchasing most cock rings.

What If My Cock Ring Gets Stuck?

An ill-fitting cock ring can get stuck, but as long as you’re being cautious, these instances are rare. Should this worst-case scenario happen to you, try adding more lube or hop into a cold shower and slide it off.

If the cock ring is made of a soft material, you can cut it off. When doing so, try sliding a tissue under the ring so you don’t pierce the skin when cutting.

If you’re stuck in a metal cock ring that won’t budge, visit an emergency room to have it removed, since prolonged constriction can cause permanent damage to your penis. (Though, again, this is a worst case scenario.)

What are the Benefits of Cock Rings?

In addition to supporting erections and adding stimulation, people wear cock rings to enhance their package in or out of clothes. Some like to wear cock rings as an accessory to feel sexy, or because it taps into their BDSM desires.

Cock rings can also delay orgasm and have also proven effective for people who experience erectile difficulty. If this is your reason for wearing one, it’s important you first consult your healthcare provider to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
